“Perception is the process of attaining awareness or understanding of the environment by organizing and interpreting sensory information. All perception involves signals in the nervous system, which in turn result from physical stimulation of the sense organs. For example, vision involves light striking the retinas of the eyes, smell is mediated by odor molecules and hearing involves pressure waves.
Perception is not the passive receipt of these signals, but can be shaped by learning, memory and expectation.”
That being said.
It really bothers me when I have something to express to my Therapist and their response is, “Well, that is how you perceive it.”
It sucks to hear but it’s true. But it’s true for everyone.
Maybe it’s how you perceive what I so call “perceive”. I realize I’m being a smart ass.
Regardless, it is important to acknowledge that perception is a factor to consider and can easily fuel false judgements. Such as, you can interpret (tell the meaning of) what a person says to you very different from what that person intended by saying it.
