Impulse Control Therapy

I was given a page called Stimulus Control Intervention recommending ways to intervene the Body Focused Repetitive Behavior.  I’ve added a few that apply to my situation.  Please comment new ideas I could add the list.  Hope this helps!

General

  • Remove tweezers, needles, safety pins, sharp objects from the house (& purse)
  • If the behavior does not occur around a person, have the person present in situations when the behavior is likely to occur

Mirrors

  • Remove magnifying or lighted mirrors
  • Remove small mirror from purse
  • Cover mirrors on walls (in your home)
  • Set a timer – to limit use of mirror to one minute

Bedroom

  • Only lie in bed when sleeping
    • Lie in the bed only when you’re ready to sleep
    • Get out of bed as soon as you wake up
  • Keep the door open
  • Remove chairs with armrests

Bathroom

  • Keep the door open
  • Remove bright lights
  • Set a timer – to limit the amount of time in the room

TV

  • Place a timer on the TV, set to ring every 10 minutes (so you have to get up and re-set it)
  • Hold a furry object in both hands
  • Sit in the middle of the couch
  • Sit on a chair with no armrests

Reading

  • Hold book with both hands
  • Hold a furry object in one hand, while the other holds the book

Computer

  • Hold a furry object in one hand, while the other uses the mouse

Driving

  • Drive with both hands on the wheel
  • Textured (shaggy) steering wheel cover

There are many alternatives to a furry object.
