Maca for Depression

One of the most recent theories regarding the worldwide prevalence of depression is that it is in part caused by a lack of nutrition.  This is where Maca for depression comes in.  Maca powder is an incredible nutritional powerhouse with nearly all amino acids, 10 vitamins, 12 minerals, 23 fatty acids as well as several unique glucosinolates. Red Maca is the highest in phytonutrient content and the most quickly acting. For depression specifically, Red is recommended over other colors of Maca.  However, all colors of Maca can be effective for overcoming depression. Hypochlorhydria and Depression

A poorly functioning digestive system (or gastrointestinal tract) can result in the malabsorption of key nutrients necessary for maintaining healthy mood patterns and overall feelings of well-being, anxiety and depression.  Low gastric acidity (a condition known as Hypochlorhydria) can lead to bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.  This in turn interferes with protein digestion and hinders the crucial task of amino acids to produce neurotransmitters; thereby potentially leading to the chemical imbalances directly linked with depression.  Poor digestion also enables a certain intestinal yeast, Candidaalbicans, to overgrow which can also trigger mood swings, depression, and anxiety. Mania and Testosterone

The androgen hormone testosterone is secreted in the adrenal glands and ovaries in women and in the adrenal glands and testes in men.  The hormone is closely related to optimal sexual performance in both men and women.  Bipolar disorder, which is associated with depression and mania, may worsen due to an imbalance in testosterone levels. Low testosterone can cause clinical depression.  Testosterone may not be a direct cause of the chemical imbalance underlying depression.  Low levels of this hormone, however, gives rise to a decreased sex drive, irritability and a lack of energy.  These negative mental and physical factors may lead to an increased breakdown of serotonin in the brain, a state directly linked to depression. High testosterone levels, on the other...

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can restore key hormones to optimum levels. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is produced by the pituitary gland, a pea-sized organ at the base of the brain. HGH is one of the most important hormones in controlling how our cells grow, reproduce and regenerate.  When restored to healthy levels, HGH increases lean muscle mass, energy and sex drive. It also helps with weight reduction and fighting insomnia. Testosterone is primarily produced by the testes in men and the ovaries in women. For men, testosterone is the hormone of puberty, reproductive health, sex drive and increased muscle and bone mass.  For women, testosterone has similar effects, increasing sex drive and reducing the severity of menopausal symptoms and bone loss. Testosterone and Depression

Testosterone is a hormone that’s sometimes also called an androgen. Androgens, including testosterone, are also known as male hormones. Testosterone contributes to a number of bodily functions, such as muscle strength sex drive bone density body fat distribution Testosterone in men also aids sperm production. Although testosterone is categorized as a male hormone, women also produce testosterone. Females, however, have lower concentrations of the hormone than men. Low testosterone in men and women can cause a number of physical and emotional symptoms, including depression. Sex hormones may play a role in the development of depression. Women have a higher risk of depression than men until they reach age 65, at which time sexual differences wane. Sex hormones may be responsible for the difference in susceptibility to...

estrogen dominance

Estrogen Dominance

Estrogen dominance is a condition in which a woman can have deficient, normal, or excessive levels of estrogen, but has too little progesterone to balance the estrogen level.  It means a predominance of estrogenic effect as opposed to progesterone effects.  It is the balance of the two that matters more than how much we have.  A woman can have a low estrogen but a lower progesterone and be estrogen dominant. Estrogen and Progesterone work with each other either as opposites or as complementing hormones. Estrogen is a stimulant (anxiety, insomnia, cellular proliferation at breast, uterus etc) and Progesterone is a calmer (patience, sleep, inhibits cell division). They also complement each other (Estrogen decreases bone loss while Progesterone promotes bone growth). Common symptoms of Estrogen Dominance : Anxiety, irritability, anger, agitation, Cramps,...

Antidepressant Induced Sexual Dysfunction

Researches were surprised to hear of an elderly patient on anti-depressants who was using ginkgo biloba to improve his memory when he also remarked on an improvement in erection quality. Shortly after hearing this, the researches put a study together to determine if there was any correlation between improved sexual function and the use of ginkgo biloba in patients on antidepressants. Surprisingly ginkgo biloba was shown to be 76% effective in treating antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction in men. Even more striking, the study showed gingko biloba to be more effective in the treatment of women with success rates of 91%. Laboratory studies have shown ginkgo biloba improves blood circulation by opening up blood vessels, making blood “less sticky” and is also a very powerful anti-oxidant. It...

Glutathione

N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) is an antioxidant and the precursor to Glutathione. Glutathione is not an essential nutrient (meaning it does not have to be obtained via food), since it can be synthesized in the body from the amino acids L-cysteine, L-glutamic acid, and glycine.  Cysteine is a factor in cellular glutathione synthesis, since this amino acid is relatively rare in foodstuffs. Glutathione (GSH) is the major free radical scavenger in the brain. Diminished Glutathione levels elevate cellular vulnerability towards Oxidative Stress; characterized by accumulating Reactive Oxygen Species.  During times of environmental stress (UV or heat exposure), Reactive Oxygen Species levels can increase dramatically.  This may result in significant damage to cell structures, known as Oxidative Stress.  Oxidative Stress reflects an imbalance between the manifestation of Reactive Oxygen Species and the body's...

Orthomolecular Medicine

Orthomolecular medicine was developed by Linus Pauling, Ph.D., winner of two Nobel prizes, in 1968.  It is designed to enable individuals to reach the apex of health and the peak of their performance by utilizing only naturally occurring substances (e.g. vitamins, minerals, enzymes, trace elements, co-enzymes).  The proper balance of these substances in the body is the key to reaching physical, mental, and emotional health and stability. Orthomolecular psychiatry began with Abram Hoffer and Humphry Osmond in the 1950s and was continued by Carl Pfeiffer of the Pfeiffer Treatment Center, although proponents of orthomolecular psychiatry say that the ideas behind their approach can be traced back to the 1920s and '30s.  Orthomolecular psychiatry's goal of weaning patients from conventional neuroleptic drugs follows "Pfeiffer's Law", "For every drug that benefits...

Iridologists believe they can use the charts to distinguish between healthy systems and organs in the body and those that are overactive, inflamed, or distressed.  Iridologists believe this information demonstrates a patient's susceptibility towards certain illnesses, reflects past medical problems, or predicts later health problems. Serotonin Syndrome (also called Serotonin Toxicity, Serotonin Toxidrome, Serotonin Sickness, Serotonin Storm, Serotonin Poisoning, Hyperserotonemia, or Serotonergic Syndrome) is a potentially life threatening drug reaction that causes the body to have too much Serotonin. Most often occurs when two drugs that affect the body's level of Serotonin are taken together at the same time. The drugs cause too much Serotonin to be released or to remain in the brain area. Signs or symptoms: Agitation Diarrhea Heavy sweating not due to activity Fever Mental status changes such as confusion or hypomania Muscle spasms (myoclonus) Overactive reflexes (hyperreflexia) Shivering Tremor Uncoordinated movements (ataxia) The most important symptoms for diagnosing Serotonin Syndrome are tremor, akathisia (unpleasant sensations of inner restlessness that manifests itself with an inability to sit still or remain motionless), or clonus (series of involuntary, rhythmic, muscular contractions and relaxations). A sugary snack or soft drink that quickly raises your blood sugar level gives you a boost, but it's short-lived. When you eat something with a high sugar content your pancreas starts to secrete insulin. Insulin triggers cells throughout your body to pull the excess glucose out of your bloodstream and store it for later use. Soon, the glucose available to your brain has dropped. Neurons, unable to store glucose, experience an energy crisis. Hours later, you feel spaced-out, weak, confused, and/or nervous. Your ability to focus and think suffers. The name for this glucose deficiency is Hypoglycemia, and it can even lead to unconsciousness.  Testing positive for Hypoglycemia are levels of glucose in the blood abnormally below 70mg. Vitamin B-9, or folic acid, plays an important role in brain development and overall mental health, and folic acid deficiency can lead to birth defects and clinical depression. Folic acid contributes to the production of S-adenosylmethionine, or SAM, which is necessary for healthy neurological function. These B vitamins cannot work well in the body without each other: Folic Acid = Vitamin B-9 = L-Methylfolate Pyridoxine = Vitamin B6 = Pyridoxal 5 Phosphate Cobalamin = Vitamin B12 = Methylcobalamin The MTHFR gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. If your body is saying, " I am so tired" all the time.  It is important to uncover why. A simple blood test can rule out Anemia. Anemia is a condition that develops when your blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells. Iron-deficiency anemia occurs because of a lack of the mineral iron in the body.
